“The umbilical cord is wrapped around her neck… twice.”
Those are horrifying words to hear coming from your doctor. But, for some reason they weren’t horrifying at all. That one sentence seemed to confirm the fact that God was in control all along.
More than twenty-seven hours earlier, Kristen and I settled into the delivery room as first-time parents not knowing what to expect. You can read books about it or hear other’s stories, but until you experience it for yourself you just don’t know. We were inducing labor since our daughter had missed her due date by more than a week. Little did we know at the time, but she didn’t want to come out. She was all “tied up,” if you will.
After several hours of labor, an epidural, little-to-no sleep, waiting, and more waiting, we were faced with a choice. The doctors were unsure whether or not it was time to push. Kristen was never fully dilated, close, but never close enough. The baby never seemed at risk, so we waited and waited. We were exhausted physically, emotionally, and spiritually. Kristen was the one doing all the work, but I’m pretty sure I was seeing hallucinations while pacing non-stop around the room.
The choice: “You can try pushing and see what happens, or we can go in and take her out via c-section. Take five minutes to think about it and let us know.”
God must have supernaturally given us clarity of mind for the next five minutes because the answer seemed crystal clear. We prayed for a couple minutes and chose what we thought we’d never have chosen. C-section. It was time to surrender.
There was a peace and calmness about it that was surreal and unspoken. It surely surpassed all understanding. The peace was like a melody that God was singing over top of us. I’m certain that this is what it feels like to sleep on a boat next to Jesus in the middle of a terrifying storm.
Had we started pushing, the umbilical chord, wrapped twice around our daughter’s neck, would have caused an emergency situation and an outcome neither of us wanted to imagine. Yet, God was in control the entire time… we only had to surrender.
I want you to know that we are presented with choices every single day, in every single moment. Our lives are similar to that of the disciples as they found themselves on the Sea of Galilee overcome by a furious storm. Waves crashing in, threatening to capsize your boat and sweep you away. But when Jesus is in your boat, when he is with you, we have nothing to fear. Raise the sail, surrender in faith.
“Fear not, for I have redeemed you; I have summoned you by name; you are mine. When you pass through the waters, I will be with you; and when you pass through the rivers, they will not sweep over you. When you walk through the fire, you will not be burned; the flames will not set you ablaze. For I am the Lord, your God, the Holy One of Israel, your Savior.” – Isaiah 43:1-3
What we need to remember is that we are not capable of, or responsible for, calming the storm on our own. The waves of resistance will come in our lives, sometimes out of no where. But, there is peace in the storm when we are with our Lord and Savior.
